A STORY FROM OUR AGENCY:
The Mediation Center has helped thousands of divorcing, separating, or never married parents create a plan for how they will co-parent from two separate households. The mediators assist the participants to focus on the issues, to hear and be heard, to understand each others' perspective, generate and explore options, and move toward a mutually acceptable agreement.
The Mediation Center helped one set of parents resolve a specific co-parenting disagreement concerning their high school aged child. Mom had primary custody of the child who wished to enroll in a different high school. When mom said 'no' the child, as teenage children will do, took herself off to live with dad and dad enrolled the child in the high school of her choice. This resulted in mom and dad no longer speaking to each other and the child not spending any time with mom. Something had to change! After discussion and option generating during the mediation session the parents were able to come to an agreement within which the child went back to living with mom yet stayed at the high school dad had enrolled her in. Mom agreed to this as dad agreed to get the child to and from school each day. And, the parents are speaking again!
