Story: Wachiska Audubon Society
In March 2009, members of Wachiska Audubon's education committee took children from the Salvation Army on a field trip to view the Sandhill cranes on the Platte River near Audubon's Rowe Sanctuary.
Several adults/parents accompanied this group. They were served pizza and snacks in the vans before embarking in the midst of the constant, unforgettable sound of thousands of cranes coming into the sandbars to feed during the evening.
Binoculars, spotting scopes, and bird field guides were furnished to ensure the most positive experience for the children. Later the committee received positive reinforcement in the form of letters of appreciation written by the kids.
