Story: Nebraska Wing of Civil Air Patrol and Starbase NE
Cadets of the Nebraska Civil Air Patrol take part in Wisconsin's annual Oshkosh fly-in. They are trained in the proper communications and marshalling of all types of aircraft for safe parking, to prevent accidents when nearly a thousand aircraft converge on that small Wisconsin community. Pilots and enthusiasts from all over the United States arrive at the air show to proudly display their aircraft and other unique flying objects. The Cadets share this experience by being close to and deeply involved with the pilots and vendors who show some of the latest technology in the aircraft industry.
Before the Cadets are selected for this encampment, they must learn about aerospace at a local Nebraska squadron and demonstrate that they can do the tasks at OshKosh with pride and a certain amount of professionalism. This preparation involves the pride and personal commitment that is seen from any high school athlete or participant in an extra-curricular school activity. They also learn the ceremonial courtesies to our flag and nation that distinguish all good citizens.
STARBASE Nebraska, a federally funded program, conducts a five-day science, technology, engineering and math academy for Lincoln area fifth grade students from Title I schools. It provides a highly interactive, "hands-on," experiential learning environment. Instruction is given within an aviation/aeronautical framework. The students interact with STARBASE Nebraska state certified teaching staff and Nebraska National Guard personnel. An integral STARBASE goal is to impart to the students the STARBASE motto: DREAMS+ACTIONS= REALITY. One of the highlights of the STARBASE Nebraska program is the tour given to view the KC135R Stratotankers, Black Hawk Helicopters, and the Base Fire Station. The kids love seeing the equipment and meeting with the Guard Members who lead the tours.
