Story: Lux Center for the Arts
An 8 year old girl takes art classes at Lux Center for the Arts. The little girl confided in her teacher at the center that kids make fun of her at school because she cannot read or write very well. She is an articulate child. She speaks well and is inquisitive. She is skilled on the potter's wheel-which is not an easy thing for a small child. Her focus on the work she is creating is like that of an adult. She is fortunate to have parents who value arts instruction. This example shows how art-making can help children who struggle in some academic areas, excel at something. Her mother told us that her self-esteem has improved significantly.
