Story: Seniors Foundation
"And I want to go to a Pow Wow." These are the words of a rider from the Lincoln Seniors Transportation Program as she guided her walker back to her apartment. As I drove her home from Westfield Shopping Mall, Evelyn told me she hadn't really gone anywhere since 2002 when first she "went blind," (she has macular degeneration), then got cancer and "sat around bald." This year, finally feeling better, she made a list of places she wants to go. Evelyn needs a way to get to these places; the Lincoln Seniors Transportation Program can provide it.
The Lincoln Seniors Transportation Program (LSTP) serves people ages 65 and older who no longer drive but can still get around without a wheelchair. The program gives seniors a ride to non-medical destinations between the hours of 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Sunday. While a fee is not required, a donation of $8.00 is suggested for each round trip ride to cover program costs.
Nationwide 600,000 people age 70 and older stop driving every year. When these people stop driving they make 59% fewer trips to stores and restaurants and 65% fewer trips to social, family or religious gatherings. They stop participating in life events. LSTP's community-based, volunteer drivers help older adults remain active and independent. Drivers donate as little as 2 hours a month in exchange for the satisfaction of keeping older adults active and independent.and finding them a safe and affordable way to do it .... and who knows you might even get to see a Pow Wow.
