A Story from our agency:
Nancy's was an international adoption. She was brought to the US when she was 9 years old and adopted by a Nebraska family. By the time Nancy was 12, her adoptive parents had divorced, and her adoptive father literally disappered. Her adoptive mother became increasingly abusive. Nancy was eventually removed from her adoptive home and placed in foster care. She was living with a foster famiy as she neared her 19th birthday, the time when she would "age out" of the foster care system and be let completely to her own devices. Nancy's CASA volunteer throughly researched all the options available to Nancy as she aged out of the system. In the process, she learned that Nancy's Social Security status was incorrect and that Nancy would be deported to her country to origin upon reaching age 19. Nancy's abusive adoptive mother refused to release original documents from the time Nancy was adopted. Nancy's CASA volunteer worked diligently to find alternate documents that would allow her to stay in the country that had become her home. In the nick of time, necessary duplicates of paperwork were produced, and Nancy was able to remain in the United States. She is grateful to her CASA volunteer for allowing her to stay in the country where her sister also lives and for helping her to get the assistance she needs to make it quite literally on her own as a young adult.
